What are graphics?

For indigenous communities, including the Guarani and Kaiowá communities, graphics and illustrations are a form of communication, containing individual ethical, social, religious and cultural characteristics of each indigenous group. Above all, graphics are a way to pay tribute to ancestral traditions and to transmit concepts from the elders to the younger generations.

A study led by the Itay Ka'aguyrusu community highlighted that the Guarani and Kaiowá use a certain set of unique themes in their graphics (lines, dots, crosses and diamonds). The drawings include Hysy Karêa (“what is broken and in a row”), which represents the movement of a snake or the zigzag of water. As the graphics are so important to the community, we decided to incorporate these designs into the very website you are currently on, through animated graphics like these:
